The Grace of Belonging, Tapovan Peace Park
Whenever I visit Tapovan Peace Park on Galiano Island, I’m reminded of how wonderful it is to belong somewhere. It’s a feeling I treasure.
This beautiful arbutus is one of my favourites. Clinging to an impossibly rocky bluff, its graceful branches twist and reach for sunshine above and below the cliff face. A remarkable survivor, perfectly at home in this unlikely place.
I painted this piece live at the Galiano, Sidney and Pender markets throughout the summer. I’m so grateful for the warmth and friendship I’ve experienced at our island markets. The conversations, laughter and music of our talented market musicians all found their way into my brushstrokes.
